Matt Magee
Phoenix based artist, Matt Magee is inspired by language and communication creating drawings, paintings, sculptures, assemblages, and prints using iconic letter forms, abstracting them to create their own identity.
Matt came to the Brooklyn studio with a few ideas in mind for us to begin our collaboration with. But when he arrived, he became instantly inspired by this U shape on one of our studio chairs. This is a familiar way of working for Matt who often uses iconic letter forms to create bold graphic images, almost creating his own typography, or partial typography which in turn implies an archeological discovery for the viewer.
Matt received his MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and has since received numerous awards including the Pollack-Krasner Foundation grant and the Josef and Anni Albers fellowship. He is represented by Hiram Butler Gallery in Houston, TX, and has recently had exhibitions at Planthouse Gallery, NYC as well as the Phoenix Art Museum.
